In 2023 herdenkt Nederland het 150-jarig jubileum van de afschaffing van de slavernij. In dit belangrijke jaar heeft het College van Bestuur de opdracht gegeven om bewustwording rondom Keti Koti op onze hogeschool te vergroten. Als kennisinstituut vinden wij het onze plicht om deze geschiedenis te kennen, te erkennen en te herdenken.
Wat is Keti Koti
Tijdens Keti Koti (spreek uit: 'kittie kottie') herdenken en vieren wij de afschaffing van de slavernij in Nederland, Suriname en het Caribisch deel van het Koninkrijk (de voormalige Nederlandse Antillen). Keti Koti (letterlijk de gebroken ketenen) bestaat uit 2 onderdelen, herdenken en vieren, net als 4 en 5 mei.
In Rotterdam is de herdenking op 30 juni. De herdenking vindt traditioneel plaats bij het Slavernijmonument aan de Lloydkade. Het bevrijdingsfeest vieren wij op 1 juli. Op die datum werd de emancipatiewet van kracht en werd slavernij afgeschaft. Echter ter compensatie van de plantage eigenaren moesten de tot slaaf gemaakte ‘vrije’ mensen eerst nog 10 jaar tot en met 1873 doorwerken op diezelfde plantages. Daarom is er pas sinds 150 jaar sprake van echte vrijheid.
Project Heri Heri: Doe mee!
Met Keti Koti eet je Heri heri, een gerecht met geschiedenis, een gerecht van verbinding. Heri heri (spreek uit 'eer -eerie') werd vroeger gegeten op de plantages. Tegenwoordig is het een lekker gerecht dat als eerbetoon geserveerd wordt tijdens Keti Koti. Hogeschool Rotterdam doet mee aan project Free Heri Heri for all waarin landelijk gratis Heri Heri maaltijden worden uitgedeeld. Met een groep studenten en medewerkers van HR gaan we gezellig samen het gerecht klaarmaken op woensdag 28 juni en op donderdag 29 juni op meerdere locaties gratis uitdelen.

De komende periode zijn er verschillende activiteiten waar studenten en medewerkers gratis aan mee kunnen doen, zo leer je op een leuke manier over de minder bekende Nederlandse geschiedenis. Het interessante programma is door de Werkgroep Keti Koti en INCLUDED samengesteld.

23 mei | Workshop Hoofddoek-Angisa binden
Ontdek de fascinerende wereld van de Surinaamse hoofddoek. Bind je eigen angisa en leer meer over de geschiedenis en betekenis van deze hoofdoeken. Diana, onze ervaren docente, zal je begeleiden bij het leren van 6 tot 8 verschillende bindstijlen. Je krijgt zelfs een hoofddoek om mee naar huis te nemen!
De workshop is geschikt voor iedereen die geïnteresseerd is in de Afra-Nederlandse cultuur en tradities. Schrijf je nu in voor deze unieke en leuke ervaring!

26 mei en 23 juni | Stadswandeling Sporen Koloniaal Verleden
Ga mee op deze fascinerende ontdekkingstocht. Onder leiding van een deskundige gids ontdek je de fysieke sporen van het koloniale- en slavernijverleden die nog steeds in de stad te vinden zijn.
Tijdens de wandeling bezoek je verschillende van deze plekken leer je meer over de geschiedenis en de belangrijke rol die Rotterdam speelde in het koloniale- en slavernijverleden. Ondanks dat het bombardement op Rotterdam veel sporen van het verleden heeft vernietigd, zijn er nog steeds overblijfselen die je een unieke kijk geven op de geschiedenis.
Ontdek de verborgen geschiedenis en fascinerende verhalen van deze bijzondere plekken. Een niet te vergeten ervaring voor iedereen die geïnteresseerd is in geschiedenis en cultuur en graag meer wil weten over deze niet te vergeten gebeurtenissen in Rotterdam.

2 juni | Theatervoorstelling Tula
De theatervoorstelling Tula vertelt het verhaal van de leider van de grote opstand van tot slaaf gemaakten op Curaçao in 1795. Tula was een gerespecteerd leider binnen zijn gemeenschap en streed in lijn met de Franse Revolutie voor vrijheid en gelijkheid. Storyteller en theatermaker Archell Thompson vertolkt het verhaal van Tula en laat zien welke impact het verhaal van Tula heeft op zijn eigen leven in het hier en nu.
Archell Thompson is een Rotterdamse storyteller en theatermaker van Curaçaose komaf en creëert met zijn verhalen een podium om maatschappelijke onderwerpen bespreekbaar te maken.
De theatervoorstelling Tula geeft je op een speciale wijze de kans om meer te leren over deze memorabele opstand op Curaçao en laat je stilstaan wat dit verhaal nog steeds betekent voor de hedendaagse samenleving.

28 en 29 juni | Free Heri Heri project
Samen koken, eten uitdelen en genieten. Hogeschool Rotterdam doet mee met het landelijke Free Heri Heri initiatief! Op 29 juni zullen wij gratis Heri Heri uitdelen. Maar waarom eigenlijk?
Ter nagedachtenis aan de voorouders en ter herdenking van de afschaffing van de slavernij door het Nederlandse Koninkrijk, is Free Heri Heri in het leven geroepen om aandacht te vragen en bewustwording te creëren voor deze historische dag. Gelanceerd op 1 juli in 2020 wordt jaarlijks op 1 juli gratis Heri Heri geserveerd door het hele land!

30 juni | Herdenking bij Slavernijmonument & nazit
Elk jaar vind de herdenking plaats bij het Slavernijmonument aan de Loydkade vlak bij onze hogeschoollocatie RMI (Rotterdam Mainport Institute). Hogeschool Rotterdam legt jaarlijks een krans. Na afloop van de herdenkingsceremonie,is er een nazit waarbij alle HR aanwezigen samen na kunnen praten onder genot van een hapje en een drankje.

In 2023, the Netherlands will commemorate the 150th anniversary of the abolition of slavery. In this vital year, the Executive Board has given the assignment to raise awareness of Keti Koti at our University of Applied Sciences. As a research institute, we consider it our duty to know, recognize and commemorate this history.
What is Keti Koti?
During Keti Koti (pronounced: 'kittie kottie'), we commemorate and celebrate the abolition of slavery in the Netherlands, Suriname, and the Caribbean part of the Kingdom (the former Netherlands Antilles). Keti Koti (literally the broken chains) consists of 2 parts, commemorating and celebrating, just like May 4 and 5.
In Rotterdam, the commemoration is on the 30th of June. The commemoration traditionally takes place at the Slavery Monument on the Lloydkade. We celebrate the liberation on the 1st of July. On that day, the Emancipation Act came into force and slavery was abolished. However, to compensate the plantation owners, the enslaved 'free' people first had to work on the same plantations for another 10 years up to and including 1873. That is why there has only been real freedom for 150 years.
Project Free Heri Heri: Get involved!
With Keti Koti, you eat Heri heri, a dish with history, a dish of connection. Heri heri (pronounced 'eer -eerie') used to be eaten on the plantations. Nowadays, it is a tasty dish that is served as a tribute during Keti Koti. Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences participates in the Free Heri Heri for All project, in which free Heri Heri meals are distributed nationwide. Together, with a group of HR students and employees, we will prepare the dish together on 28 June and distribute it for free at several locations on Thursday 29 June.

May 23 | Workshop Headscarf-Angisa tie
Discover the fascinating world of the Surinamese headscarf. Tie your angisa and learn more about the history and significance of these headscarves. Diana, our experienced teacher, will guide you in learning 6 to 8 different binding styles. You even get a headscarf to take home!
The workshop is suitable for anyone interested in Afro-Dutch culture and traditions. Register now for this unique and fun experience!

May 26 and June 23 | City walk Traces of Colonial Past
Join us on this fascinating journey of discovery. Led by an expert guide, you will discover the physical traces of the colonial and slave past that can still be found in the city.
During the walk, you will visit several of these places and learn more about the history and the important role that Rotterdam has played in the colonial and slave past. Although the bombing of Rotterdam has destroyed many traces of the past, there are still remnants that give you a unique perspective on history.
Discover the hidden histories and fascinating stories of these special places. An unforgettable experience for anyone who is interested in history and culture and would like to know more about these unforgettable events in Rotterdam.

June 2 | Theater performance Tula
The theatre performance Tula tells the story of the leader of the great uprising of the enslaved in Curaçao in 1795. Tula was a respected leader within his community and fought for freedom and equality in line with the French Revolution. Storyteller and theatremaker Archell Thompson interprets Tula's story and shows the impact Tula's story has on his own life in the here and now.
Archell Thompson is a Rotterdam storyteller and theatremaker of Curaçao origin who creates a platform with his stories to discuss social issues.
The theatre performance Tula gives you a special opportunity to learn more about this memorable uprising in Curaçao and lets you reflect on what this story still means for today's society.

June 28 and 29 | Free Heri Heri project
Cooking together, sharing food and joy. Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences participates in the national Free Heri Heri initiative! On June 29th we will hand out free Heri Heri. But why exactly?
In memory of the ancestors and in commemoration of the abolition of slavery by the Dutch Kingdom, Free Heri Heri was created to draw attention and create awareness for this historic day. Launched on July 1 in 2020, Free Heri Heri is served annually across the country on July 1!

June 30 | Commemoration at Slavery Monument & Review
Every year, the commemoration takes place at the Slavery Monument on the Loydkade, close to our RMI (Rotterdam Mainport Institute) location. Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences lays a garland every year. After the commemoration ceremony, there is a follow-up during which all HR attendees can talk together while enjoying a snack and a drink.

June 19 to July 3 | Keti Koti exhibition
There is a pop-up exhibition at various locations with student portraits, resistance heroes, and traditional costumes.
