Frequently Asked Questions about the INCLUDED Calendar
The calendar is, first and foremost, an accessible and practical tool for lecturers. A classroom is essentially a mini-society where different perspectives and backgrounds come together. At an inclusive university, every student should feel seen and heard. By acknowledging holidays or commemorative days of specific groups, lecturers contribute to that goal. At the same time, other students learn about the existence and meaning of these days.
Of course, the calendar can also be used by colleagues outside the classroom. In this way, INCLUDED works across the university to foster recognition, awareness, and connection.
Whether you’re a lecturer, communications advisor, trainer, or a colleague committed to an inclusive university, the calendar offers plenty of opportunities to highlight special - often still unfamiliar - moments throughout the year in your work or conversations.
Get inspired to start something: a classroom activity, an event, an intranet post, or simply a meaningful conversation with students or colleagues. You don’t need to be an expert in diversity and inclusion to make space for these topics. Making mistakes is okay. If you approach the conversation openly and with good intentions, your students or colleagues will feel that.
A few ideas:
- Wish your students a happy Pride, Diwali, Eid, or other celebration when it comes around.
- Start your lesson with: “Today is Coming Out Day / World Mental Health Day / Lunar New Year. Would anyone like to share something about it?”
- Invite students to talk about traditions or holidays that matter to them.
- Find a link with the content of your lesson or training.
INCLUDED is a student-driven platform committed to raising awareness, fostering connection, and promoting inclusion within the university. We aim to create space for perspectives that are less often heard. That’s why the INCLUDED calendar focuses primarily on holidays and commemorative days that are less visible or well-known in the Netherlands.
Christian holidays are included in the calendar, but they are not given additional explanation. These days are already deeply rooted in Dutch society. Even the system of official public holidays is based on them—think of Easter, Good Friday, and Christmas. Because these holidays are widely known and receive plenty of attention, we do not highlight them separately on the INCLUDED calendar.
Sure! Send an email to INCLUDED@hr.nl and include your name, institute address, program, and (if possible) your room number. We’ll send you the calendar while supplies last.
