The society has fundamentally changed: people live not only in a physical but also in a digital world. Everything we do is digitized and traceable in cyberspace. Data can be seen as a natural resource like oil and gas, and now drive many digital applications that can not only monitor but also predict our behavior. In many fields, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is already being successfully applied, such as in marketing, design, or logistics. Healthcare is increasingly seen as an area where AI can be of added value.
Healthcare is under pressure due to increasing aging, staff shortages, and the growing complexity of diseases (comorbidity and context). The way healthcare is currently organized is not sustainable and will not suffice for the near future. AI can make a valuable contribution to this.
However, this will not happen merely by developing new applications but also by developing the necessary skills that a healthcare professional needs to work responsibly with AI. Additionally, domain expertise is also essential for developing AI and ensuring the safety of such AI-driven applications. Especially in paramedical professions and nursing (which involves 80% of all healthcare activities), there is a great need, but the minority of AI applications are developed.
The AI&DSH research group is dedicated not only to developing new AI-driven applications in healthcare or acting conscientiously with such technology but also to creating an environment where the professional of the future (healthcare and data professional) has the opportunity to develop the necessary skills for the challenges of the future and to face them with AI and data science.
