International Business and Languages fulltime

Four-year bachelor in English, starts in September

International Business and Languages (IBL) is a broad English-taught study programme focused on European languages and international marketing and communication.

IBL trains students to become professionals who are well equipped to do business in several foreign languages, with business partners from different cultural backgrounds. As a graduate of IBL you will act as the link between a company and the international business environment; mapping the interests of a company or organisation, setting goals and translating these into plans. Your expertise in business and marketing is given greater reach through your proficiency in foreign languages. You make and maintain contacts with a company or organisation's international relations; particularly in the areas of purchasing, sales-, account and export management. IBL graduates are much sought after as skilled communicators who, with an excellent command of at least three modern foreign languages (English, Spanish, French or German), can play a key role in the entire business communication. The IBL graduate operates in different countries and cultures. Ethical and responsible business is a key concept. Graduates have a thorough understanding of cultural foundations, quickly feel at home in other cultures and understand the (inter)cultural context in which international business is being done.

This programme is part of the Rotterdam Business School (Dutch).

    Programme structure

A view of the study programme
    Vision on education

Everyone is welcome at the study programmes of Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences (Hogeschool Rotterdam). Students and lecturers all know each other and everyone is easy to find. Lecturers work very hard at guiding the students in their studies in a way that fits the student. This demands a sense of commitment and active participation. All of us shape our education.

Characteristic for the education of Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences is the attention that is paid to:

    • A basis of knowledge for professions
    • Working in the professional practice
    • Your own professional identity

All these elements will be part of your study programme. Starting out the focus will be on your development and competencies, but then the professional practice will be introduced as well. You will learn to handle actual issues of the professional practice together with other students, lecturers, applied researchers, and professionals. At the start you will also receive plenty of guidance from your lecturer, but later you will work in a much more independent manner. During your studies you will learn a lot about yourself and discover your unique qualities as a professional.

    Language selection

If you want to study IBL at the Rotterdam Business School you must learn 2 foreign languages. You must choose 1 language that you will study in an intensive track and 1 language in a regular track. The intensive track starts at the beginning of A2 level, which means that you must already know the basics of that language (A1).

    More information

    First year

The first year is designed to give you a good impression of the study programme and the professional field. It comprises practical projects supported by classes in business economics, research, communication, marketing and management. You will also follow two modern foreign languages (choose from Spanish, French or German). One in an intensive track and one in a regular track. Basic knowledge of the language for the intensive track is highly recommended.

    After the first year

In the second year of the programme you will increase your knowledge of economics, marketing communication and sales. You learn to identify, analyse and solve international business problems. The main phase includes an internship abroad and a specialisation once you return to Rotterdam. You will also study for one semester at one of our partner schools abroad. The last half year is devoted to your graduation assignment.

    Electives and support

    Electives

During your studies, you can choose several elective subjects. This gives you the opportunity to look beyond the boundaries of your own study programme and to give substance to your specific learning needs. Part of the programme is a placement in a company of your choice. Through a specialisation in the main phase of studies, you choose a specific profile that allows you to differentiate yourself. With your graduation assignment you give a personal touch to your education.

    Support

Every student is unique and has his own ideas about what he wants to achieve during his studies. We will support you by making you aware of your abilities, opportunities and challenges. Sometimes, during or even before the start of your study programme it becomes clear that you are struggling with a particular subject. It will be useful to brush up your knowledge in that area. As a student you will be assigned a coach (a lecturer) who will guide you and who will monitor your progress. It is also possible to ask for a peer coach, a senior student who trains younger year students.

    Studying with a disability

If you have a disability and therefore require some extra facilities, we offer various options (information in Dutch).

    Placement

In the third year you do a placement of one semester abroad. In the first two years of your study programmes you will already get hands-on experience through several projects.

    Fast track

Aside from the regular four-year programme, IBL offers a three-year learning track specifically for students with previous education at Dutch pre-university level (VWO) or a similar foreign diploma. Both the propaedeutic phase as well as the second year of the programme will be offered in one year. After this year, you continue on to the third-year of the regular four-year programme.

For this three-year Fast Track, the programmes IBMS and IBL work together, resulting in mixed classes. The Fast Track programme consists of intensive English-taught courses, in which theory is discussed in the context of the business practice.

    International opportunities

Do you have the courage to explore new horizons ? The IBL programme has two compulsory semesters abroad. In the third year, you do a placement and in the fourth year you study a semester at a partner school. Preparation for your study abroad, which can also be a project in cooperation with a partner school, starts in the sixth semester (third year) in the form of a specialisation. You can opt for International Business Communication, Doing business in Latin America or Doing Business in Eastern Europe. In the first two years of the programme you take part in many projects, either abroad and/or in cooperation with international companies.
