European Summer University Logistics

Mobility and Sustainability

Cooperation between Rotterdam Business School/Netherlands, Fachhochschule Frankfurt/Germany and Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) from 02-28 July 2012 in Frankfurt, Rotterdam and Winterthur.

In the past, industrial value and supply chains were organised along only a few - mostly domestic - levels for production and distribution. Nowadays theses supply chains are much more complex across several countries and often even continents. Apart from global supply chain processes, also human mobility has become global, both for business travelers as for tourists. Professional commuters travel today typically more than one hour and in many cases one hundred kilometers - twice a day.

As a result of rapid development of global productivity and the increasing mobility as well as growing transport volumes there are significantly increased emissions of greenhouse gases. As a consequence of this, beside the inevitable shortage of fossil resources, the global climate change will lead to increasing average temperatures all over the globe with following rise of the sea levels, following dramatic impact on the global island world and also continental coastal regions. Changing monsun cycles and the growing deserts as well as observed increasing thunderstorms have a dramatic impact on human living conditions in all regions.

The European Summer University Logistics, Mobility and Sustainability addresses these global issues, offering a combination of scientific lectures, practical exercises and self-experiences as well as selected field trips. The programme is open to bachelor and master students as well as to professionals in Europe and overseas who want to extend their knowledge in the fields of logistics and mobility by interlinking it with profound expertise in sustainable development. It highlights the intercorrelations between sustainable development and both logistics and mobility, including unique field trips to Frankfurt Airport, Rotterdam sea port and the construction side of the Gotthard-base-tunnel railway development project.

The summer university starts July 2, 2012, lasting four weeks until July 28, 2012 and will be held in English. Participation fee is €2,500. Students who register before April 15 can avail of the early bird discount and pay €2,300. Included in the price are beside the lectures the complete documentation as well as all field trips to locations in Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland, all transport to programme events and accommodation. Travel to/from Frankfurt as well as food and beverages are covered by the participants themselves. Successful participation will be granted with 6 ECTS.
